Poet: Vikram Seth

Sit

Sit, drink your coffee here; your work can wait awhile. You're twenty-six, and still have some life ahead. No need for wit; just talk vacuities, and I'll Reciprocate in kind, or laugh at you instead. The world is too opaque, distressing and profound. This twenty minutes' rendezvous will make my day: To sit here in the sun, with grackles all around, Staring with beady eyes, and you two feet away.

Through Love's Great Power

Through love's great power to be made whole In mind and body, heart and soul - Through freedom to find joy, or be By dint of joy itself set free In love and in companionhood: This is the true and natural good. To undo justice, and to seek To quash the rights that guard the weak - To sneer at love, and wrench apart The bonds of body, mind and heart With specious reason and no rhyme: This is the true unnatural crime.

Vikram Seth is a highly acclaimed Indian writer. Born in Calcutta in 1952, he is most known for his famous works "The Suitable Boy" (1993) and "The Frog and The Nightingale" (1994).

Lesser known about him is that he identifies as bisexual, and has greatly contributed to the fight against s.377 (decriminalizing consensual homosexual intercourse).

I am vaguely familiar with the poet, from my school days but I have only started to venture into his works presently. I hold an instantaneous affinity. I love his range- from intimate personal poems to larger social commentaries. If you like the former, highly recommend "A Style Of Loving" (beautiful, please read). "The Tale of Melon City" is an example of the latter style.

I will read and review his prose soon. Until then, thank you for being here. Toodles!
