At the bottom of the ocean
Beneath thai reefs
Lies cold my lover
For this’ unforgiving sea
For this’ unaccustomed earth
Lies cold his mother
Cigarette ends lost in a
Hearth of contemporary steel
Kaushik, I whisper
I dare to say your name
Remembering winter's wrath
And poor Anne in her grave
Puffer jackets ugly
Brown as our skins
As pretty as your love
Wasn’t I too simple for your sins?
“Don’t go,” oh my bangle
Wasn’t it you who fled
For the uncanny life
of New York's empty bed
Landscapes, women change
But the apathy? never
For this’ familiar feeling
Of unconditional pain
Between blurry visions
Lies cold my lover
Understood,
known at last
With mother, and
her accustomed place.

Hi! This is based on a book/collection of short stories I read. Tis the Unaccustomed Earth by Jhumpa Lahiri. Part 1 stories of the book= I thoroughly enjoyed. ThE poem is based on part 2 though, which I think I hate XD (I kept it vague and symbolic as possible to avoid spoilers dw bc I still recommend the book)
See, the downside of loving literary fiction is bing bada BOOM the HURTTTT. I will make a whole blogpost ranting about thAt Buuuuttt for now- enjoy this poem.
I'm sure even if you haven't read the book you can interpret some story or appreciate the poetic structure. I'd LOVEEE to hear your thoughts on this if you do have some!!!
[it has come to my notice that the comments section isn't working :(, i'll try to fix that if possible, until then, my blogCHAT and whatsapp are open <3 sorry for the inconvenience]
