No Candle No Light

the scent is melting,

off into the air;

vanishing

half-breathing

fire of mine -

stay, I beg

it wavers harder;

writhing

orange-blue

gas of time -

only still,

of own accord;

hold and it slips,

blistered hand -

candle no light,

till the candle goes;

darkness upon

the lonely wick.

-samjam I've been reading a bunch of (and about) Emily Dickinson poetry since a friend lent me a book of selected poems. The recurring themes of death, and search for meaning in life are quite alluring. The title is also that of a Zayn x Nicki Minaj song that I like xD Explaining stuff : A candle, in my head, is the best and closest metaphor for a life The scent is symbolic of a will or passion to live. Its like the Greek concept of 'Eros' ; A candle can be seen as either 'emitting' fragrance or 'draining' off this scent Second and third stanza refer to how little control anyone has over the way time goes, and the hand that tries to control how the flame moves, only ends up getting blistered. Darkness and lonely wick mean death and sole-corpse respectively (how wholesome of me ;p) Thank you for reading, toodles!
