since feeling is first

who pays any attention

to the syntax of things

will never wholly kiss you;

wholly to be a fool

while Spring is in the world

my blood approves,

and kisses are a better fate

than wisdom

lady i swear by all flowers. Don’t cry

– the best gesture of my brain is less than

your eyelids’ flutter which says

we are for each other; then

laugh, leaning back in my arms

for life’s not a paragraph

And death i think

is no parenthesis

- E. E. Cummings

About the poet-

Edward Estlin Cummings, was an American poet, visual-painter, essayist, playwright and more (like phew we geddit, you're talented) He wrote approximately 2,900 poems and god knows how many more we don't know of. His style consists of weird grammar and lowercase letters (total instagram aesth girl vibes). A lot of his poetry have this ongoing theme connected to nature and animals; this gives his imageries a feeling of tenderness even when the topics at hand get dark.

Why I picked this poem:

This was the first poem that I read of Cummings, and I seem to love it more and more each time I reread it. I also felt this encapsulates all the elements of his style that I mentioned above. Thank you for reading this far! If you liked this, do subscribe for more of my weekly posts! :))
